The Tesla Wallbox or, more correctly, the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector, is Tesla's own wallbox. It is available from Tesla's online shop for 500 euros and is usually always available. As the name suggests, this is the third generation of the charging station.

All Tesla models, i.e. S, 3, X and Y, can be charged with the Tesla Wallbox. But e-cars from other brands can also be charged. The charging station has an output of up to 22kW (usually 11kW is used) at 32 amps and is connected to 3 phases. It has a permanently installed cable with a length of 7.5 m and can be installed both indoors and outdoors (IP44).

The Tesla Wallbox Gen 3 can be connected to WIFI and can thus load new firmware updates. It has internal load management and can share the connection with 3 other identical wall boxes and distribute the load. If the power fails, the wallbox can automatically resume operation and continue to charge the Tesla Model Y or 3.

The charging cable of the Tesla Wallbox has a type 2 plug. This has the special feature that it has a charge port opener button. This makes it possible to open the charging flap, as you are used to from the Supercharger. This makes the Tesla Wall Connector unique on the market.

It is possible to enable the Gen 3 Wall Connector's charging access control. This allows you to restrict charging access. You can choose from the settings "All Vehicles", "Tesla Only" or "Approved Tesla Vehicles Only".

Alternatives to the Tesla Wallbox Gen 3

Due to the growing market for electric cars, the selection of alternatives to the Tesla Wallbox Gen 3 is also growing. We have selected some of the most interesting of these alternatives for your Tesla Model Y or 3 and would like to briefly present them to you in the next section.

Alternative 1: Myenergi Zappi

Strength: PV surplus loading

If you have a photovoltaic system on your house, you naturally also want to use the electricity to charge your Tesla. Unfortunately, the Tesla Wallbox Gen 3 does not support this function.

Here the Myenergi Zappi Wallbox would be interesting for you. This Tesla wallbox alternative includes sensors that are attached to the house connection and wired to the wallbox. With the help of these sensors, the system recognizes exactly how much electricity is being fed in by the PV system and can be used. The Zappi Wallbox then charges the Tesla depending on the PV surplus.

The Zappi Wallbox has an output of up to 22kW (usually 11kW is used) at a maximum of 32 amps. The wall box is available with both a 6.5 m long charging cable with a type 2 plug and a charging socket. The Zappi Wallbox has protection class IP65 and is therefore better protected than the Tesla Wall Connector Gen 3.

The Zappi Wallbox offers different charging modes depending on the current energy production, so it adapts to the circumstances. In addition to the ECO and ECO+ charging profiles, there is also a FAST mode for fast charging with maximum performance.

In addition, the Zappi Wallbox automatically adjusts the charging power from 1.4 to 22 kW (maximum) depending on the consumption situation in your home. The Zappi Wallbox is also available with either a charging socket or a type 2 charging cable. The wallbox in the version with a permanently connected charging cable has a type 2 plug and the cable is 6.5 m long.

For a smarter solution, there is the optional Myenergi Hub (for app connection and updates) and the Myenergi Harvi (wireless sensor for energy monitoring). However, these must be purchased separately.

Alternative 2: Elli Charger Pro

Strength: MID-certified energy meter - good for company cars

The Elli Charger Pro Wallbox is a premium wallbox manufactured by a subsidiary of VW. This wall box is not only compatible with vehicles from the Volkswagen brand, but also with all e-cars from other manufacturers that have a type 2 connection for the charging cable, including Tesla Model S, Model X, Y and 3.

The Elli Charger Pro Wallbox has protection class IP54, so it is also slightly better protected against splash water than Tesla's Gen 3 Wall Connector.

The maximum charging power of the Elli Charger Pro Wallbox is 11 kW, a special feature is the integrated MID-certified energy meter, and the wallbox also has various Internet and network interface options. This allows you to connect it to a network either via LAN/Ethernet or to the Internet via WLAN or LTE.

Charging processes of your Tesla Model 3 or Y can be monitored via Elli's in-house app. In terms of access control, the wallbox is equipped with an RFID card reader, which means that the charging process can only be started after approval with an RFID card.

Alternative 3: Easee Home Wallbox

Strength: Thanks to the integrated SIM card, no WLAN is required

The Easee Home Wallbox (up to 22 kW) with charging socket is presented as fully dynamic because it automatically recognizes the charging power between 1.7 and 22 kW. This solution is also characterized by the fact that it is significantly smaller (according to the manufacturer 69% smaller) and at 1.5 kg lighter than comparable wall boxes.

In addition, this wall box has automatic load balancing and an integrated e-SIM including a free lifetime 4G subscription. This means you don't necessarily have to have a WiFi signal in your garage. Nevertheless, communication with the Easee Home Wallbox is of course also possible via WLAN.

As a security feature, this wall box also offers an integrated RFID card reader for authorizing charging processes. The Easee app has intelligent features such as live monitoring and control of the current charging process of the Tesla Model 3 or Y or additional, app-controlled access protection. If you want to customize your Easee Home Wallbox, you have various covers in several colors available.

With protection class IP54, this wall box also has slightly better splash protection than the Wall Connector from Tesla. This Tesla Wallbox Gen 3 alternative is also suitable if you want to charge your Tesla Model Y or 3 indoors outside.

Alternative 4: "My smart wallbox" Black Edition by EnergieSOLUTION

Strength: Dynamic PV excess charge

The "My smart wall box" Black Edition up to 11 kW in the Design by Energy Solution has a 7.5 m long type 2 charging cable. The box or front hood is all black with an elegant blue logo on the front and is made of stainless steel. This allows Tesla Model Y and 3 to be charged with a charging capacity of up to 11 kW.

The "My smart Wallbox" Black Edition is IP54 splash-proof, so it can also be installed outdoors without any problems. This wall box also has local dynamic load management, which makes it possible to connect up to 16 electric cars at the same time.

Another special feature is that "My smart wallbox" also allows the so-called photovoltaic (PV) surplus charging. Any excess electricity from your PV system is used to charge your electric vehicle. This is possible because the wall box can connect to your in-house Home Energy Management System (HEMS).

If the Wallbox is to be protected against unauthorized access, this can be implemented optionally or at an additional cost with an external lock or a key switch. However, this additional solution must be installed by a certified electrician.
